Week 1: Timeline for Film, Animation and VFX. And understanding of their history.

Understanding:

Technology is an extremely part in animation. At almost every successful point in animation history, the film was born with a new technology. For example, Snow White born with rotoscoping to show character’s characteristics. Toy Story born with the primary of CGI, Avatar is the high level of CGI showed how fast CGI has come showing almost reality films with world texture, creatures and scenery.

Of course, I found that most of these new technologies firstly showed in film. For example, the films production companies use claymations create realistic creatures. Like KING KONG in 1933 . After 1986, the claymations are popular as a kind of animation. And CGI was created in 1986, firstly it was used in film and a short animation. Until 1995, Pixar releases a full feature CGI film with the help of Disney called Toy Story.

As technology gets more and more advanced, people’s requirements on visual experience are also getting higher and higher, the picture will get more and more cxciting. Firstly the 2d animation, secondly 3d animation, now CGI.

I was a little worried that, even if the animation had initially demanded no violence, it would inevitably include fighting scenes as the market demanded more excitement in order to cater to the audience. Does that contradict what the animation started with? Fortunately, I saw a sentence in the video. That is: Emotion is made tons of films, But they have started to use computers to help them along and also bring in special effects. So in some ways animation and CGI managed to find a way to work together.

Timeline:

1800 First actual animation 1. The rope is attached to the cardboard. 2.Storyboard which was a spinning cylinder with a ring of pictures on the inside, and when you spun it and look through the slits you would see a moving image like a horse or penguin.

1872 Eadweard Muybridge was asked to settle a bet one way or the other. At any point in a horse’s gallop are all four legs off the ground. Five years later in 1877, Muybridge settled the bet by setting up a system of 12 separate stills cameras spaced 21 inches apart, each camera ran on trip wire that was triggered by the horses hooves. Here a succession of photographs gives the impression of movement the very basis of film.

1895 Cinema began 1895, this is the fist film comedy on screen, the boy stands on hosepipe blocking the flow of water. In Paris. Very first film.On December 28th 1895 the Lumiere brothers demonstrated their invention of motion pictures for the very first time. At first, it wasn’t be noticed, but few days later, word-of-mouth was so strong, two thousand people are outside this building trying to get in. Very popular. The first sensational film in the history of cinema: A train coming into a station

1901 That moment of horror was satirized in this British comedy.

1900 Video cameras are about animation. Truly could start to exist on the big screen.

1914 First characteristic animation. Gertie Dinosaur. The first smooth drawn animation with funny moving animals or creatures in good quality and a scene.

1928 Disney’s first show. It was iconic character of Mickey Mouse. The first animation to produce music as sound. No violence also shows up in The Simpsons and that stays in animation for a life sentence once cartoon that points. This out is itchy and scratchy a children’s cartoon featured in the Simpsons.

Very shocked, there should be no violence in animation.

1929 Animation expanded or something new happened. Something that wouldn’t destroy animation but won’t make people aware as entertainment. The Wall Street crash of 1929 also known as Black Thursday where the stock market just crashed and billions of dollars was lost. People lost their jobs and homeless roads. This led to the great 10-year depression, people had no money or not a lot. They couldn’t feed themselves or their families. They were bored but they could go to one place and that was the theater. People went to theater to watch lots of cartoons that just come out like the skeleton dance made by Walt Disney. Because of the great depression, more and more cartoons were being made and people’s love for animation grew stronger. Because of this it led to what Disney producing something that will change animation forever.

1933 Before CGI was used to make realistic, films production companies use claymations create realistic creatures. KING KONG.It was a laborious task to get a creature to move. 1958 The 7th voyage of sinbad. The fully articulated puppets had to be moved in small increments and photographed for every single framed film.1963 Harry Housing created his most famous.Skeleton battle, the scene which inspires filmmakers to this day. It took over four months to complete.

1937 Techniques were invented and animations evolution expanded. Snow White was the first ever feature film to be created by Disney. The movie used a bunch of different and new techniques like rotoscoping (转描技术), detecting used to get real human movement. An actual person dancing then the animators were traced over the film frame by frame and turn it into an animation. One piece of equipment that Snow White had it is disposal was the multi-depth camera, which allowed the camera to shot in with depth of field on the scenery so they would have a scene.

Disney also created his own sound effects and music with his own orchestra(管弦乐队) for Snow White. One thing that Snow White was famous for was his character’s characteristics(人物的特征). The seven dwarf all have their name and personality.

Animation works the same as any video. Technically video cameras are always filming animation. Animation is a series of pictures all squeezed together, each as a tiny movement. When you start the video, the pictures widths by your eyes, tricking your brain.

FPS: frames per second. This is to say how many pictures go past in one split second.

1969 Animation booming. WARNER BROS, Looney Tunes. Hollywood‘s way of creating real-looking monster used by animators. JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS. 1979 to 1983 The seventh voyage and one million BC

1970 Animation booming. Used for not only cartoons but also advertising.

1985 YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES. The artists that industrialized magic or IM. 1989 The abyss.Part of those were spent using an early version of Photoshop, the first use of the program in the feature film. 1991 Judgment Day. Camera and IM recycled and improved upon the water effects and used them for the liquid metal sidewalk in Terminator. 1993 Stephen Spielberg’s Jurassic Park revolutionized computer graphics.

1986 Pixar: CGI Computer Generated Imagery. It is making animation using computers. Basically you would make your character out of triangle, really small triangles. Then you would take into the animation software and drag it about like a rag doll using keyframes to help you move. It’s easier and cheaper. It can make cartoons look almost realistic. But it was a big pain for sale animation because there was something new and amazing. Maybe when a new product comes out, people will become shocked and painful. They need more time to accept new technology.

Claymation: It was used to create realistic and bizarre creatures that would make audiences jump out of their seats. Clayation is when you create objects out of clay or some sort of soft material. Then you move it in tiny movements and take a frame until you have enough images to make a small video clip of your claim object moving. This can take a lot of time. It’s sometimes takes a week to make your purse of move one step. But once you’ve got the clip, you can be amazed of your results.

1988 Anime(日本动漫) was introduced to west

1995 Animation had made its way to be one of the most popular children’s entertainment in the world. Animation was really booming. Pixar releases a full feature CGI film with the help of Disney called Toy Story. A great start.

2001 Square Pictures created the 1 Hyper Real, fully computer generated feature film based on original designs. Milestone and due to low box office earnings, ultimately a financial disaster.2003 In the sequel to the Matrix, the artist and escape used a process called Universal Capture. Which in essence produced the recording of the real actor’s performance, which could then be played back from different angles and under different lighting conditions. 2005 King Kong rephotograph in digital technology.

2009 Avatar directed James Cameron created the film and was mainly just CGI. This showed how fast CGI has come showing almost reality films with world texture, creatures and scenery. The box office alone made 2.7 million dollars. I think this kind is the combine of film and animation. The context of Avatar is similar with POCAHONTAS.

2014 CGI is the dominant species of animation. Emotion is made tons of films like The Simpsons, Family Guy American Dad, Archer and Kim Possible. But they have started to use computers to help them along and also bring in special effects. So in some ways animation and CGI managed to find a way to work together.
