Week 4: Reading the Mise-en-scène

Reading all the cmponent showing to the audience.

First example: The Bread Winner

The girl is in the middle, and the other figures are at the sweet point. And the cables in the picture lead our eyes around the frame.

Second example: Isle of Dogs

Use a close-up and a group shot to present the facial features of these four different dogs. They were looking in the same direction, there should happen something like quarrels or fighting that attract their attention.

Use a long shot. There were four dogs standing behind the bags. They looked at the bag carefully, maybe they were curious about the contents of the bag. And the line between sky, fence and earth is right at the sweet point.

Third example: Paperman (lighting)

This animation uses light to create an aesthetic atmosphere.

The frame I think is in low key lighting:

Usually, use low key lighting when the scene is indoors or in order to create depressed emotion in character. One thing I find interesting is that the boy usually appears in low key lighting and use low key lighting when the guy feels down.

The frame I think is in high key lighting:

Generally, use high key lighting when the scene is outdoors or in order to create hopeful emotion in character. When the girl appears, it mostly uses high key lighting.

The frame I think is in high contrast lighting:

This animation uses high contrast lighting to express the light getting in through windows or the contrast between shadow from buildings and sunlight.

One interesting frame is:

The boy walked from the bright to the dark. Maybe the bright area represents the desire for a girl, and the dark area means the boy wants to quit. Just then, the paper aeroplane flew out of the light to stop the boy. Paper planes and lighting run through the whole animation, they have a deep meaning.
