Project 1-2: Character design and modelling body

Character design

I remembered the character design I had done before, and there was a character design with a lotus as the element.

Based on this, I drew three views of her. Since I haven’t painted for a long time, I found some references to the three views. To make the character look more realistic, I changed the outline of the legs and arms.

Modelling:

I found this tutorial on the website:

Start with a cylinder for the torso and limbs and simplify it to 12 edges.

There are two ways to combine limbs and torso:

  1. Make the interface of the two objects separately and add wire to the object with less wiring. Combine two things – Merge points.
  2. Use the point snap tool to confirm whether the number of points at the junction of the torso and limbs is consistent. Combine two objects – Merge points.

When modelling, I found some inaccuracies in the three views, and I modified it in Maya, so there were inconsistencies between the reference drawing and the model.

When making the hand model, I chose to use the model built by others in the video. However, I think the hand model in the video is too much like a natural person, while my character setting tends to be a cartoon. So I built my own.

Later, I decided to make it five fingers because I thought there was a lot of hand animation in the project.

In my imagination, the figure’s hands are made of lotus petals, as shown in the picture above. To achieve this effect, the palm is much shorter than the normal palm.

Ways to reduce wiring when connecting hands and arms:

The video above references making dresses because the skirt is in the shape of lotus petals.

I used the method of making lotus petals taught in this video to make the skirt of small flower fairies.
